Abstract

This paper provides a logical, step-by-step approach to address flow-induced vibration in piping systems and pipelines. Starting with immediate actions when significant vibration is observed, followed by root-cause determination with a description of the various sources of vibratory excitation, proceeding to monitoring techniques to monitor the hydraulics or the vibratory motions, determining the degree of severity of the monitored parameters, and providing the full range of hydraulic and structural options to reduce or eliminate the vibration. The paper addresses the existing standards and criteria for flow-induced vibration in piping systems, across industries.
