ASME Code Case N-513-3 allows evaluation of flaws in elbows to be evaluated as straight pipe if the flaw is located within a distance √Rt from the weld, provided the elbow is welded to straight pipe. The recently published revision to N-513-3 (N-513-4) provides guidance for evaluation of flaws in elbows when the flaw is remote from the butt weld, but this approach may be overly conservative for flaws near the butt weld. This paper will utilize finite element models to examine the stress distribution in elbows with uniform wall thickness. The results of this paper may be used as supporting evidence to modify the √Rt limit in evaluation of flaws in butt welded elbows in a pending revision to Code Case N-513-4 (N-513-5).
