This paper describes the results of a three dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation of a rapid temperature increase in liquid water flowing through a relief valve, using Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) to predict the solid domain temperatures.

Surface Heat Transfer Coefficient (HTC) and bulk fluid temperature histories extracted from this simulation have been applied to a thermal structural Finite Element (FE) analysis of the valve body, providing an additional set of solid domain temperatures for comparison.

The aim of this paper is to compare the precision of the solid domain temperatures predicted by the CHT and HTC/FE simulations.
