Vessels used for hazardous waste treatment have passive systems for mixing, sampling, and monitoring that require sizeable internal vessels and piping. Stress analysis and code qualification of such safety related vessels, their internal components and associated supporting structures pose some unique analytical and design challenges. Pertinent issues encountered in the process of developing finite element analysis and design code evaluation methodology are reviewed, and proposed resolutions are presented.
