In designing pipe flange connections, it is important to examine the hub stress, bolt load and the gasket stress distribution which governs the sealing performance. However, actually a simpler calculation method is needed for designing a pipe flange connection. In the present paper, a simpler calculation method is proposed using shell-ring theory which is modified Kohmura method. In the present calculation method, a separation point at the gasket interfaces can be estimated accurately, in addition to the rigidity of flange and the bolt preload for a given allowable amount of gas leakage. In addition, a design method taking account the leakage is demonstrated and calculation examples are also shown for better understanding.
