This paper discusses the current status of NDE requirements in Section XI and future directions. The Code is well on its way migrating towards performance-based requirements in contrast to the traditional prescriptive requirements. The requirements for ultrasonic examination performance demonstration are contained in Appendix VIII and this has had a significant impact on the nuclear industry. The question arises as to the necessity and value of imposing performance demonstration requirements on the less technically demanding surface examination methods such as magnetic particle and liquid Penetrant examination methods. The impact of risk informed inspection and license renewal on NDE should be evaluated in the near future. Finally, the trend towards developing performance based NDE personnel certification requirements will be described.
