This paper presents the methodology adopted for developing an expert system tool to assist in evaluating the condition of a turbine generator. Fuzzy logic is used to represent the reasoning process of an experienced engineer as well as the incomplete information inherent in this type of evaluation. The results of the evaluation inform engineers of: (a) whether the inspected unit is in good condition, (b) if not, the damage mechanisms or failure modes present, and (c) the non statistical but weighted confidence level of the evaluation.
