Abstract

The focus of the present paper is on the prediction of wave loads experienced by a patrol boat and frigate at high speed. The basic principles of a potential flow panel method to predict motions and loads are discussed. Next the coupling to a finite element method representing the ship structure is described. A description of scale model tests performed for both hull forms is given. A number of validation cases for a generic patrol boat and frigate hull form are discussed, whereby experimental and simulated responses and time traces of motions, accelerations, pressures and bending moments in regular and irregular waves are compared.
