In this paper the author attempts to validate the ability of CFD and DEM to predict the added resistance due to brash ice. For this, a comparison is made between measured data and computational results. In addition, the paper provides details on the computational effort required. The results show that the added resistance calculated with CFD and DEM has the potential to be valid. Due to uncertainties in the measured data and inconsistencies observed in the computational results, however, no definite conclusion on its validity can be drawn.
