A vortex-induced vibration (VIV) inference technology, termed as VIV detector, has been developed at Shell. The underlying idea is to use the tension measurements of a tubular to infer its bending responses due to vortex-shedding. A prototype was developed for monitoring VIV of the tendons of a tension leg platform (TLP). The theoretical frame work, including key parameters and design curves for commonly used offshore tubular, is discussed herein. Examples are provided, which indicate the agreement of the inferred and the measured responses of models in laboratory conditions. The benefits and potential applications to other structures are suggested at the conclusion.
