The penetration of the jackup platform will be much deeper, and the weight of the backfill above the spudcan will make more contribution to the resistance of jacking up of the platform. The prediction of the depth of the shoe pits is most important in estimating the weight of the backfill over the spudcan. This paper presents a method for predicting the depth of the shoe pits on the basis of superior limit theorem of ultimate analysis by comprehensively investigating the non-drained shear strength of backfill soil, the penetration depth and the spudcan shape. An experimental device is set up to verify the predicting formula, and very good results are obtained.
