Extreme wave heights and extreme crest heights are estimated by the initial distribution approach and by Peak Over Threshold (POT) analysis for storm events. The analysis applies the Ekofisk Reference Data Set (ERDS), which is a high quality data set covering a time span of 26 years from the Ekofisk Area in the North Sea. The paper addresses methodology issues that influence the predicted extreme value statistics for metocean variables. These issues include plotting position, minimization procedures for least squares regression, and threshold selection for the POT analysis. Furthermore, directional statistics, sampling variability and combination of wave crests and sea level variability. Uncertainties and sensitivity to assumptions are discussed.
