This paper addresses key practical issues in joining modular pontoons for constructing large floating platforms in rough seas. Five fundamental requirements for an ideal pontoon connector design are summarized to be self-alignment, impact attenuation, rigid engagement, self-tensioning and adequate strength. Nine relevant patents on pontoon connector designs are reviewed based on the 5 requirements. A novel design concept of floating platform securing device (connector) is introduced, which consists of Fender Connector [11] and Frictional Locking Connector [12]. The new connector concept integrates the five functions into one compact connector design. The design concept, working model, product prototyping and testing are presented. The performance and benefits of the connector are illustrated. The current and future developments are discussed. The potential applications are exemplified.
