This paper presents an approach to vortex-induced vibration (VIV) design of marine risers. It begins with a brief review of the issue and then proceeds to presenting the key elements needed to make VIV predictions for marine risers. Uncertainties and discrepancies between model prediction and field measurements are discussed. Examples are used to illustrate the approach presented herein. Conclusions are drawn at the end of this paper.
