It is a challenge to find cost effective insulation systems for subsea flowlines operating at high internal temperatures. Integrated polymeric insulation coatings are susceptible to degradation by hydrolysis or oxidation. Burial of the flowline accelerates the degradation due to the higher outer surface temperature. In addition does the high temperature modify the mechanical properties of the coating materials. It is recommended to include the temperature history of the field in the design basis. Also it is necessary to perform impact test and shear tests of the coating system at the operational temperature. For buried pipelines it is necessary to calculate the insulating effect of the backfill materials on the surface temperature.
