Reliability based techniques have been extensively used in the assessment and re-assessment of existing offshore structures as well as in the calibration of design standards, particularly those adopting an LRFD format. At a design level, however, such techniques are yet to find a more widespread application. As far as mobile drilling unit (MODU) or mobile production unit (MOPU) concepts are concerned, the challenge is to model the complex behavior of the unit considering several different attributes, constraints and objectives. The paper outlines recent progress in reliability based techniques that may be used in future designs as well as the current limitations that need to be overcome before such techniques are more widely accepted by designers.
