The current drive for increased efficiency and reduced cost of machinery, usually results in a requirement for mass to be minimised. To avoid vibration related problems therefore, considerable effort has to be expended to increase the stiffness or damping of the structure. In terms of development of materials to achieve these goals, damping has probably received the least attention. Work carried out at the Universities in addressing each of these issues is described in the following sections.
