After thirty years of existence, on-line inspection using intelligent pigs has developed and matured into one of the most important tools for preservation of our pipeline assets world-wide. In that time it has undergone major changes to arrive at its current level of sophistication. The changing role of inspection and our expectations of it are addressed in this paper.
