This paper outlines the technologies used in adjustable frequency electric drives from 500 HP up, and gives an overview of some of the present application concerns and solutions to potential problems that should be considered for reliable operation. The electronic devices and systems as well as the types of motors are briefly described. Application concerns with the external power system, the drive itself, thermal, mechanical and electric problems with motors as well as systems concerns are discussed.
