Abstract

The Rail Transportation Division (RTD), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) annually conducts a survey to document progress in the design, construction and use of freight cars and components. This year’s survey brought responses which indicated that 1998 was not a banner year for new developments. The continued evolution of freight equipment in 1998 focused on flexibility and versatility.
