Abstract

An experimental model was developed to apply radial forces around a uniform cylinder of femoral bone to determine the short term strain response. Eight strain gages were applied at equal intervals around the circumference of the cylinder. No significant differences exist between the circumferential strain magnitudes of each cortical region, however, there is a trend for a difference between the posterior region and the other regions. Further analysis needs to be done to elucidate the relationship that may exist between the strain and the bone morphology and composition of the cortical regions.
