In this investigation we consider the lateral motion of axially rigid sliding beams protruding from a stationary rigid wall. The main objective is to consider the large rotations and small strains and to examine the nature of the motion of sliding beams and point out the salient features of the motion.

Once we obtain the equation of motion for geometrically nonlinear sliding beams, we compare them with those for pipes conveying fluids and we show similarities in these equations for the two physically different systems. Next we use the Galerkin method and obtain the transient response of the problem. To verify the formulation and its computational implementation we analyse several examples and compare our findings with those reported in the literature.
