The flow-induced vibration of a vertical cantilevered pipe with an end mass, is examined for the case that the upper end of the pipe is excited periodically in a horizontal direction. The fluid velocity of the axial flow in the pipe is over the critical value, above which the nonplanar pipe vibration is self-excited due to the internal flow. First, the effect of horizontal excitation at the upper end of the pipe is discussed with the nonlinear coupled equations governing the nonplanar pipe vibration. Second, the experiments were conducted with the silicon rubber pipe conveying water, and the spatial behaviors of the pipe were observed using the image processing system.
