Abstract

The effect of pedestal liner compliance on rail vehicle hunting is investigated using a NUCARS simulation model of a heavy freight locomotive. The need for the pedestal liners, as well as some of the existing designs, is discussed. A new design for pedestal liners is recommended to improve the critical hunting speed of the railway vehicles. Different possible arrangements for the recommended design are also presented. Further, a NUCARS simulation model of a three-axle locomotive is used to show that the new design can significantly increase the critical hunting speed, without adversely affecting the curving performance of the vehicle.
