Abstract
Recently, some researchers proposed what is termed as “active mode localization” where all or some of the mode shapes are altered by feedback in such a way that the modes are spatially localized. The resulting closed loop behavior is similar, at least qualitatively, to the phenomenon known as “Anderson localization” or normal mode localization which occurs due to irregularities (disorders) in periodic structures. This study is an attempt to find the relationships between active and passive mode localization. It is demonstrated that similar results can be obtained by either a passive design which exhibits normal mode localization or by an active controller which is obtained by employing some of the recently proposed design methods of active mode localization. It is anticipated that the ideas proposed in this study will be useful in developing systematic methods for integrated structure/control designs.
