In order to improve fuel economy of electric vehicles, a battery/ultra-capacitor energy storage system is proposed and tested in AVL-Cruise. The battery is treated as the main power source of the vehicle, and the ultra-capacitor will store the energy when braking. In this paper, an adaptive neural-fuzzy controller is developed to control the energy system. It can split the power flow in a more efficient manner. The simulation result shows the new control strategy has a better fuel economy than the traditional fuzzy logic controller.
