Presented here is a method for selectively depositing solid sodium azide (NaN3) upon a substrate. An array of nitrogen producing cells fabricated using this method can be sequentially activated to produce small quanta of nitrogen gas. This is of interest in creating microscale thrusters for positioning and aligning pico-, nano-, and micro-satellites, which require minimum thrust impulses on the order of 10μN·s and thrust levels of 1–10mN. A 1cm × 1cm thruster chip is expected to provide 34mN·s of thrust impulse.
