This paper shows how the economic, technological, and environmental contexts of today influence the conceptualizations and role of Mechanical Engineering as a discipline. Special attention is given to the environmental and energetic scope in order to define the current responsibility of this science, which specializes in energy consumption at both national and international levels, and to define its role in designing systems that let us use energy more efficiently and with less pollution. Based on this, at the end of this paper some abilities are listed that the Mechanical Engineer in today’s Mexico must develop during his or training.
