One of the major obstacles that currently prevent the widespread applications of DMFCs is the methanol crossover through the proton-exchange membranes (PEM). The present paper discusses the influence of different operating parameters, such as concentration of methanol, pressure, temperature, thickness and equivalent weight of membrane and catalyst morphology, on methanol crossover. It also discusses the development of PEM for DMFC. The effect of methanol crossover on DMFC performance is presented. The discussion of findings and recommendations for future research are presented.
