Environmental impact index estimation for a specific ecosystem is presented. The strategy is based on techniques that incorporate assumptions of the methodology of irreversibilities within an ecosystem, setting the basis for an environmental impact index. The results obtained by the application of this method to a specific ecosystem provide valuable information about the quantity of exergy that an ecosystem could contain, gain or loss. Because most of the time emissions do not play an important role in the ecosystem in which emissions are released, consequently the useful energy for maintaining the processes in the different parts of an ecosystem is wasted (being the parts of the ecosystem the water, the soil, the atmosphere, the organisms and the society). The depletion of useful energy depends on the number of times that the emission pollution happens and on the ecosystem capability to transform contaminants, since exergy is consumed and entropy is produced by the emissions. This application leads to indicate that the concept of irreversibilities may be used as a measure of the reduction and excessive use of resources.
