Mixing inside a moderately turbulent Rushton impeller stirred tank (STR) has been explored using both experimental and computational tools. Numerical predictions showed satisfactory agreement with experimental observations. Mixing behavior of a passive scalar inside the tank is predicted numerically in order to identify the zones of poor mixedness. Effects of variable impeller-speed are studied through velocity measurements using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Impeller-speed perturbations promoted the spreading of impeller jet and enhanced the level of turbulent fluctuations. The enhancement in fluctuating components of turbulent velocity is expected to promote better mixing inside the tank.
