In most DEM codes, the governing equation for static problems is solved in an explicit scheme that involves a set of motion equations with numerical damping. With such an explicit scheme, parameter calibration is demanded in order to obtain a converged solution and to achieve a state of static equilibrium. This paper presents two criteria, based on the homogenized stress equation, for evaluating the static force balance and the static moment balance, respectively. Numerical examples demonstrate that these two criteria play a critical role in calibrating the explicit scheme and preventing it from generating erroneous results.
