This study investigates the transient response of saturated soil to extreme heat under severe tunnel fires by both experiments and CFD simulation. A basic soil-column configuration heated from below is chosen to examine the transport dynamics experimentally. The temperature rise, thermal transport, and pore pressure increases in saturated soils are measured in this fundamental configuration. A 2-D CFD simulation with a similar geometry sizes and boundary conditions is performed. The CFD simulations have shown correctly qualitative behavior observed in experiments, including the saturation front moving upward and the distinct regions developed in the soil medium.
