Abstract
A generic method of formulation for shaft and bearing systems in Lagrangian dynamics is described. The method incorporates combined lateral, axial and rotational rigid body dynamics of such systems, incorporating the restraining action of bearing supports through rolling element to races contact forces. For an example, the case of a horizontal dry vacuum pump is used. The vibration spectra obtained agree well with those encountered in practice.
