Abstract

The inhomogeneity and anisotropy of articular cartilage has been experimentally verified, but little has been done to quantify the effects of such material variation on mechanical behavior. We present a method to calculate volume-averaged quantities over tissue regions, used in conjunction with a 3D biphasic finite element analysis. Such average quantities can be used in parametric studies of different material property models, readily permitting statistical comparisons that are difficult with point-wise quantities.
