The development of active lubricated bearings and journal bearings controlled by active chamber systems has a short history of a little more than one decade. Nevertheless, research activities have shown the potential of such new mechatronic devices and this paper is intent to give an overview of the promising field of mechatronics applied to tribological systems, with emphasis on the dynamic performance of hydrodynamic bearings. The main experimental results are summarized and the advantages and limitations of such new devices are elucidated.
