The National Fire Protection Association’s “NFPA 85 Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards Code 2001 Edition” currently requires an independent logic solver for each burner management system. This requirement can result in high costs when providing burner management systems for multiple boiler applications. Current logic system technology provides dual and triplicated redundant logic solvers with the capability to reliably perform emergency shutdown functions for multiple equipment. This paper presents a hypothetical study that will quantitatively show the high level of availability and reliability that could be achieved employing a redundant logic system in multiple boiler applications. Common cause failure considerations will also be addressed.
