An experimental approach is used to evaluate the condition of the machined surface in a micro machining operation. In particular, the effect of tool cutting edge geometry on the quality of the machined surface is evaluated in a face turning using micro depths of cuts. Cutting tools having sharp edges without a nose radius, sharp edges and having a nose radius, and tools having edge chamfers and a nose radius are used in this investigation. Surface micro-hardness and surface finish was measured and machined surface was examined using an optical microscope. In addition, tool forces were measured during the machining operation for all the cutting conditions used in this experiment. Surface micro-hardness increased with an increase in depth of cut. Surface micro-hardness was highest for tools having chamfer and nose radius and was lowest for tools without chamfer and having nose radius. The results were interpreted in terms of the thrust force that varied with the condition of tool cutting region.
