In this paper we analyze certain mechanical systems, and the effect of damping on their stability. We focus on a category of systems which admit a strange behavior, such as the gyroscopic pendulum: when modeled as systems without damping they are stable and possess steady motions, but when small damping is introduced, the steady motions become randomly and unstable. The Meijaard stationary sliding model and the strength of damping concept are also discussed.
