Abstract
This work presents an analysis of the experimental free dynamics of a coupled beam/pendulum configuration. The analysis, which is based on the method of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition, identifies the characteristics of the active degrees-of-freedom dominating the dynamics. Depending on the level of energy a motion is initiated, the interaction dynamics bear distinct signatures of reduced slow dynamics and distinct signatures of the interaction dynamics created by instabilities of reduced slow and fast dynamics.
