Abstract
This article presents a paradigm for concurrent or simultaneous design. The paradigm explains apparent paradoxes in the development strategies of the Toyota Motor Company. Evidence from various interviews in the U.S. and Japanese automakers and automotive suppliers is presented, including two in-depth case studies. The article concludes with a discussion of the potential benefits of this paradigm.
