Abstract
Embodiment design of mechanical systems can be viewed as a process of constraint specification and satisfaction of highly coupled equality and inequality constraints. A set of methods and tools developed to support this process are described in this paper. These methods include a product model capable of supporting the necessary design information, the use of generic components to rapidly specify design constraints, and SANCS (Simulated Annealing Network Constraint Satisfier), an algorithm developed to automate the satisfaction of large sets of design constraints.
