Abstract

In a machine design course, working on design projects is essential to learning how to apply the material. However, the hand calculations are often long or require the use of a computer to supply more information than possible through hand calculations alone, especially for repetitious iterations. TK Solver, by Universal Technical Systems, Inc. makes these iterations quick and easy compared to other available software. TK Solver has been used to make the large number of calculations needed, in the design of machine elements for example, to select bearings from a catalog knowing the required life and load rating. Also, in the design of gears and pinions, many trials of running through the same set of equations while only changing the diametral pitch and face width are needed to completely specify the dimensions, of the component while falling within the necessary safety factor criterion. Once these equations are set up, the necessary variables can be changed to accommodate any type of bearing load or gear combination.
