Abstract

The detection of gouging and collisions in multi-axis machining is a profoundly difficult problem that prohibits its wide spread practical use. In this paper, we investigate the use of symbolic tools to detect tool gouging in 5-axis machining tool-path of sculptured surfaces. Further, we also present a heuristic approach to eliminate the gouging, whose result is a gouge free 5-axis toolpath.
