Abstract
This paper presents a cost-effective implementation of a sensor monitoring system based on a network of workstations and microprocessor building blocks. The PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) system is used as the software platform running the workstations. Owing to PVM, the burden of network programming is eliminated. The control software running on multiple workstations can be implemented in a way similar to that of a single workstation. The interfaces to users and to databases can be easily implemented.
