In the current market conditions, steam power plants must always be run at the most profitable operating point. This primarily demands a high degree of flexibility, high efficiency, high availability and low emissions. The Siemens Power Plant Automation Process Optimization (SPPA-P3000) solutions allow plant operators to achieve these objectives.

The SPPA-P3000 Combustion Optimization solutions are purely software based. They require no changes to mechanical equipment. The SPPA-P3000 Combustion Optimizer provides closed-loop optimization of fuel and air mixing by manipulating fuel and air levels to balance combustion in the furnace. The important benefits of the optimizer includes greater combustion efficiency and consequently lower fuel costs, reliable combustion of supplementary fuel, reliable combustion of a wider range of coal types, etc.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the boiler efficiency improvement attained by using the SPPA-P3000 Combustion Optimization at Unit 4 of Rizhao Power Plant, P. R. China. This unit is a 660 MW supercritical, tangential-fired boiler that uses soft coal. The increase in boiler efficiency was achieved by utilizing existing combustion equipment, existing combustion controls system, and a new ZoloBOSS in-furnace laser based combustion measurement system. The SPPA-P3000 Combustion Optimizer improves the boiler efficiency by reducing the O2, improving and balancing the combustion, balancing the temperature and O2 distribution in the boiler and by continuous adaption to varying boiler conditions.
