Document-based design is slow, error-prone, and inherently unfriendly maintaining a traceable source design basis. An alternative approach — relational design, maintains critical top level regulatory criteria design relationships based upon the fundamental technology framework. Virtually no systematic, process-induced errors result. Documents cannot match relational-based design methods, which effectively cover entire plant operating lifetimes. Compared with documents, modern relational data technology structures are more accurate, and cost less to build, maintain, and use over time. Applying relational methods will improve new nuclear construction and subsequent plant operations quality, accuracy, and speed — overall lowering costs.
