One of NUMO’s policies for ensuring safety is staged and flexible project implementation and decision-making based on iterative confirmation of safety. The safety assessment takes the central role in multiple lines of reasoning and argumentation by providing a quantitative evaluation of long-term safety; a key aspect is uncertainty management. This paper presents NUMO’s basic strategies for long-term safety assessment based on the above policy. NUMO’s approach considering Japanese boundary conditions is demonstrated as a starting-point for evaluating the long-term safety of an actual site.
