Abstract

The Windscale Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactor (WAGR) is the UK’s demonstration project for power reactor decommissioning. As part of the SAFER programme, funded by the DTI, UKAEA have contracted BNFL Magnox to implement the work. The reactor is being dismantled on a ‘top-down’ basis and a major current task is to dismantle the hot gas manifold (hotbox).

AEA Technology was contracted to supply equipment to size reduce and remove the hotbox. The strategy makes use of manual, semi-remote and remote techniques. Semi-remote tools were built and deployed and then set to work with the assistance of personnel entering the radiation area. The equipment was then operated remotely from a control room located in an adjacent building.
