The CEA has studied a detector prototype equipped with an optimized Compton Suppression Spectrometer for the measurement of low energy rays, especially those of 241Am at 59.5 keV, in radioactive waste packages.

In this article, the optimization of a Compton Suppression Spectrometer (CSS) is described with the aim mentioned above. The simulation tool used to evaluate the potential solutions is described and the results obtained on an actual measurement with the prototype designed for this purpose, are presented. The continuum level is divided by a factor of 6 at 59.5 keV. The general agreement between the simulations and the experimental measurements is very satisfactory. The differences noted are explained.
